PUBLIC LECTURE: NATO’S NUCLEAR DETERRENCE

The Clingendael Institute and the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs have the pleasure of inviting you to a free public lecture, entitled ‘NATO’s Nuclear Deterrence’ by Jessica Cox. Sico van der Meer, Research Fellow, will open the event. Register here.

Keynote speaker: Jessica Cox

Jessica Cox is Director of the Nuclear Policy Directorate at NATO Headquarters in Brussels. She provides policy support to the Secretary General and others at NATO HQ on matters related to NATO nuclear deterrence, chairs the Nuclear Planning Group Staff Group, and will chair the NATO-Russia Council Nuclear Experts Group (which is currently suspended).

The role of nuclear deterrence within NATO policies

Ms. Cox will share her perspectives on the role of nuclear deterrence within NATO policies. Set against an increasingly complex geostrategic picture, where bilateral models of deterrence and stability are challenged by the spread of advanced technologies and by the advancement of nuclear programmes in states outside the NATO-Russia axis, renewed thinking about the place and practice of nuclear deterrence within NATO is required.

How has NATO adapted its approach to nuclear issues in the face of newly emerging challenges? What impact does the combination of a more multipolar world and more widespread advanced technology have on NATO’s nuclear planning and deterrence capabilities? And how do these questions relate to wider issues, such as discussions in the context of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, political fragmentation within Europe, and concerns over the reliability of US alliance commitments?
