Puerto Rico's Path to Resilient Recovery and Reconstruction

Last fall, the Ford Foundation, Open Society Foundations, The Rockefeller Foundation, and 100 Resilient Cities came together to support the Resilient Puerto Rico Advisory Commission, a collaborative effort led by Puerto Rico’s philanthropic, business, government, and NGO sectors to build back an island that is physically, socially and economically resilient for the future.

In June, the Commission released the ReImagina Puerto Rico Report, a blueprint to rebuild Puerto Rico as a more resilient and equitable island. A result of more than 75 meetings, consulting with over 1,000 Puerto Ricans, the Report outlines 97 concrete recommendations across six sectors to put Puerto Rico on the path to resilient recovery and reconstruction in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

The goal is not only to repair the critical systems devastated by Hurricane Maria, but to rebuild in a way that makes the island physically, economically, and socially resilient in the long run.

Throughout the development of the report, 100 Resilient Cities worked closely with the Commission by providing technical support and resilience expertise. 100RC’s experts across a wide range of sectors joined the Commission’s working groups, provided a resilience framework and methodology, and collaborated with local experts to embed resilience throughout the report’s recommendations. The result is a comprehensive and actionable strategy to help Puerto Rico rebound and rebuild.

It’s estimated that Puerto Rico will receive tens of billions dollars in federal recovery funds. The Resilient Puerto Rico Advisory Commission is working to ensure these resources have maximum impact and change the trajectory of Puerto Rico’s development. We are so proud to support this work.
